"SALGIR RIVER" BY NASTASIA Y

Crimea – the home of Crimean Tatars, as well as Nastasia’s fondest childhood memories. Crimea is also the birthplace of the War, the first place to be occupied by Russia exactly 10 years ago, and a dark reminder of generational trauma since Stalin’s ethnic cleansing of the Crimean Tatar people in 1944. Nastasia believes we should sing louder to counter the silence, and give a voice to those whose language is facing extinction. This is a bold re-imagining of a Crimean Tatar folk song “Salgir Boyu” (“The Riverbank of Salgir”) from their indigenous homeland, Qirim.
